Background: Simultaneous operations are of particular importance in gy
necology and general surgery for women with ovarian and colorectal car
cinoma, respectively, The increased coincidence of carcinomas of the e
ndometrium and colon in postmenopausal women with colorectal carcinoma
s as well as the high frequency of metastasis in the ovaries are taken
into account. Patients and results: Between 1987 and 1994, 445 simult
aneous operations (gynecology and general surgery) were performed at t
he Klinikum Krefeld. In 206 patients, simultaneous operations were per
formed in case of colorectal carcinoma or ovarian cancer. Neither the
intraoperative nor postoperative morbidity was increased when the conc
ept of simultaneous operations was applied. Conclusion: Performing a h
ysterectomy and adnexectomy simultaneously in postmenopausal patients
with colorectal carcinoma avoids the difficult diagnosis and treatment
of endometrial carcinoma later on. Furthermore, this therapy concept
takes into account the increased coincidence of carcinomas of the endo
metrium and colon as well as the high frequency of ovarian metastasis.
