Vi. Molotkov et al., Liquid plasma crystal: Coulomb crystallization of cylindrical macroscopic grains in a gas-discharge plasma, JETP LETTER, 71(3), 2000, pp. 102-105
Ordered structures formed of 300-mu m-long cylindrical nylon grains with di
ameters of 15 and 7.5 mu m are obtained. In contrast to conventional spheri
cal monodisperse grains, which, under certain conditions, form the plasma-d
ust Coulomb crystal, the cylindrical grains in the plasma acquire a charge
of similar to 7 x 10(5) electrons and form a structure similar to a liquid
crystal. The parameter characterizing the nonideality of the dusty componen
t of the plasma attains 10(6). Grains are suspended in the striation in the
horizontal plane and line up in parallel with each other. (C) 2000 MAIK "N
