Forest soil science as a scientific discipline was formed during the e
xpedition of the Forest Department, organized by V.V. Dokuchaev. His i
deas about the effect of tree species on soils and soil-tree interacti
ons served as the basis for forest typology and forest soil science. P
eculiarities in the structure of forest ecosystems and prolonged effec
ts of logging and wildfires force the forest soils to develop properti
es that differ from the soils of other ecosystems.
