The quantitative dependences of CO2 and N2O emission on soil water ten
sion (P) were studied by the method of gas chromatography in four type
s of loamy soils-chernozem, soddy-podzolic, sierozem, and krasnozem (r
ed ferralitic soil). The data on gas emission are expressed as a ratio
(E-rel) of emission at a certain moisture tension to maximal emission
noted for that soil. The dependence of E-rel on P is close for all th
e soils studied and is described by the following equations: E-rel = 0
.7 - 0.28 log\P\ at -200 < P < -0.1 atm and E-rel = 2.12 + 0.9 log\P\
at -0.1 < P < -0.01 atm.
