It is well known that manganese can catalyze hydrogen peroxide decompositio
n under the conditions of peroxide bleaching, resulting in having to use mo
re peroxide for bleaching. However manganese in various oxidation states ma
y have different reactivities in such a reaction. In this paper; the cataly
tic activity of Mn(II) and Mn(lll) in decomposing hydrogen peroxide was fur
ther examined. The results showed that Mn(ll) is not catalytically active,
while Mn(III) is. Strategies to minimize the Mn(lll)-induced decomposition
of hydrogen peroxide, including reduction with sodium borohydride or by an
acid treatment, ave discussed.
