Study Objective. To evaluate the significance of the abnormal-appearing app
endix during gynecologic laparoscopy.
Design. Retrospective study (Canadian Task Force classification II-2).
Setting. University-affiliated hospital. Patients. One hundred sixty-six wo
men.
Interventions. Laparoscopic appendectomy.
Measurements and Main Results. Five of 166 appendixes removed for abnormal
appearance contained a carcinoid tumor. At least one patient was a candidat
e fbr additional resection.
Conclusion. It is important for gynecologists to be aware of the possibilit
y of a carcinoid tumor of the appendix, particularly if an abnormality is s
een at the time of surgery.
