In this research, reactions between pure aluminium/its alloy and molten sod
ium at 350 similar to 450 degrees C have been investigated. Optical microsc
opy and X-ray diffraction analysis were used to observe and analyze the mor
phology, the distribution and the growth kinetic mechanism of corrosion pro
ducts. Experiments showed that corrosion severity of specimens from molten
sodium was related to the content of silicon in aluminium, and that corrosi
on of aluminium-silicon alloys in molten sodium was a diffusion-controlled
solid-state reaction. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A, All rights reserved.
