The photoluminescent behaviour of Cr3+ in several materials of commercial o
rigin was investigated, and results were compared with those of more usual
optical, structural and elemental analysis methods. Some of the above mater
ials were identified as defect spinels, belonging to the MgAl2O4-Al2.67O4 (
gamma-alumina). The use of photoluminescence spectroscopy appears specially
advisable when samples of unusual shape or size have to be identified.
