We report a nanosecond Nd:YAG-pumped optical parametric oscillator (OPO) ba
sed on periodically poled lithium niobate whose optical bandwidth has been
narrowed to < 250 MHz by the use of a grazing incidence diffraction grating
. The single-mode OPO output could be tuned over 1.48-1.80 mu m (signal) an
d 2.61-3.82 mu m (idler), with a threshold pump energy of 1.1 mJ and slope
efficiencies of up to 36% (signal) and 10% (idler). The OPO emitted a stabl
e output beam with a smooth spatial profile and an value of 1.3. (C) 2000 E
