A novel heterometallic propionic acid compound SrCu3(C2H5COO)(8). 3H(2)O is
prepared and characterized by X-ray crystallography [DAR-UMB diffractomete
r, T = 293(2) K, CuKalpha radiation, R = 0.094 for 5150 independent reflect
ions with I > 2 sigma(I)]. The structure contains two crystallographically
nonequivalent copper(II) dimers and an insular dinuclear [Sr-2(Prop)(4)(H2O
)(6)] complex, all combined into a three-dimensional framework by the bridg
ing carboxy groups of the propionate ions. The strontium coordination polyh
edron (C.N. 9) is shaped like a 4,4,4-tricapped trigonal prism. The methyl
groups of two propionate ions are disordered.
