Results on the large gyromagnetic effect (LGE) observed in FeSiB amorphous
wires are reported. This effect consists in the appearance of a sample rota
tion around its axis, with frequencies from 1 to 60 Wt, when the sample is
subjected to an axial alternating held of similar to 10(2) A m(-1) with a f
requency of similar to 10(4) Hz. The observed experimental characteristics
of the effect: indicate that its appearance is closely related to the forma
tion of a magnetic standing wave, associated to the 180 degrees domain wall
movement from the axially magnetized inner core of such wires. The magnitu
de of the wire's magnetostriction constant plays an essential role as conce
rns the macroscopic rotation of the wire. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. Al
