This work is focused on the recent advances, mainly achieved during the pas
t ten years, on the recovery of silver using solvent extraction. Within the
general purposes usually associated with the use of solvent extraction, re
search on the selective recovery of this valuable element from aqueous solu
tions is particularly emphasized, as it can be useful for potential hydrome
tallurgical applications. In addition, work devoted to a better comprehensi
on of extraction reactions in given systems is also a value adding, deservi
ng a special mention in this review. The information provided is systematic
ally classified according to the general structural type of the extractants
involved, the type or types of atoms in the extractants directly responsib
le for metal extraction being, whenever possible, highlighted.
