The performance of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) process for the t
reatment of slaughterhouse wastewater, with and without dissolved air flota
tion (DAF) as pretreatment was evaluated. Working parameters for the DAF pr
ocess were evolved by bench scale studies. The biochemical methane potentia
l (BMP) of the raw wastewater, the float and the subnatant (from DAF) was e
valuated by serum bottle techniques. Results revealed higher biodegradabili
ty of the fractions as compared to the raw waste. The operation of UASB rea
ctor at 30 +/- 1 degrees C with pretreated waste was found to be technicall
y feasible. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
