Microbial biomass content and some physical and chemical parameters have be
en measured in surface and subsurface horizons of three forest soils locate
d along a vegetative-altitudinal transect of the Tuscan Apennines. The resu
lts indicate that both the forest cover and the altitude affect the microbi
al biomass concentration. Biomass C is also regressed with bulk density, to
tal N, organic C, and porosity; this regression is statistically significan
t. The biomass C is apparently untied to soil pH and ECEC.
