Callogobius nigromarginatus, was collected from muddy-sand bottom close to
a reef flat in Taitung County, southeastern Taiwan. This species has 25-26
lateral scale rows, thus belonging to the group with fewer scale rows as pr
oposed by Goren et al. (1991). Diagnostic characters of this species includ
e: fewer predorsal scales (5), 7-8 transverse scale rows, with posterior oc
uloscapular pores, three preopercular pores, pelvic fraenum present, and di
stinctive color pattern (broad stripe on 2nd dorsal and anal fin in adult).
A key to all eight species of this low-scale-row group is also presented.
