Boost-rotation symmetric spacetimes are the only locally asymptotically fla
t axially symmetric electrovacuum spacetimes with a further symmetry that a
re radiative. They are realized by uniformly accelerated particles of vario
us kinds or black holes. Their general properties are summarized. Several e
xamples of boost-rotation symmetric solutions of the Maxwell and Einstein e
quations are studied: uniformly accelerated electric and magnetic multipole
s, the Bonnor-Swaminarayan solutions, the C-metric and the spinning C-metri
c.
