Chloramphenicol acetyltransferase production in a soluble and active f
orm was promoted four- to five-fold by increasing culture temperature
of Escherichia coli from 37 to 42 degrees C. Comparison of cat mRNA le
vels at the two temperatures did not explain differences in enzyme act
ivity, suggesting a post-transcriptional regulation.
