Abstract
An analysis of available definitions of the term "soil degradation" is sugg ested. An original definition of soil degradation based on proper soil char acteristics is proposed. The difficulties that arise during the mapping of soil degradation phenomena are discussed. The potentialities and basic prin ciples of such mapping are revealed.
