Abstract
Professional competency is an issue of central concern to all professional fields and to the consumers of the services they provide. Wide-ranging view s exist, however, as to how competency should be defined, maintained and re gulated. In this paper. key issues related to competency evaluation and mai ntenance are described. and viable alternatives for enhancing the fidelity and adequacy of professional services are presented.
