Abstract
Field evidence shows that, contrary to common belief, sheet fractures and s tructures are due to compressive stress. A suite of minor forms including A -tents or pop-ups are of similar origin. This interpretation carries a rang e of implications for civil engineering and quarrying projects. The minor f orms are also indicators of seismicity. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.
