We discuss the thermal Casimir effect in a thin hybrid nematic cell, and we
analyse the enhancement of the fluctuation-mediated force due to the frust
rating effect of competing surface interactions. The force exhibits a non-a
lgebraic and non-monotonic dependence on the distance, and it dominates the
total structural interaction in the system. Similar behaviour is found in
the Friedericksz cell, characterized by a bulk destabilizing external force
.
