Radiometric investigation of Cs-137 vertical profiles has been performed in
seven cores collected from six lakes located in the Danube Delta. All prof
iles are characterized by the presence of a single radiocesium maximum. Two
subtypes of vertical profiles have been evidenced. The first one, illustra
ted by a shallow maximum, is specific to the relatively isolated small lake
s, while the second one, particularized by a deeper maximum and greater tot
al radiocesium inventory is representative for the lakes connected to the D
anube river main branches. The numerical data concerning the sedimentation
rate, radiocesium total inventory and maximum penetration depth have been i
nterpreted in connection with water flow, sediments origin as well as trans
port and accumulation processes. Copyright (C) 2000 by Marcel Dekker, Inc.
