TRXRF has proven to be an excellent analytical technique for water analysis
. Samples from a 50,000 km(2) area of the Argentine Pampa were collected an
d analyzed using a total reflection system. The AXIL software was used for
deconvolution of spectra and quantitation of data. Calibration was carried
out by measuring synthetic solutions using Ga as internal standard. In orde
r to validate the method, measurements were performed on NIST SRM 1643c. Co
ntents of V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, As and Ba higher than those recommended as max
imum upper levels for drinking waters have been measured. Results were cons
idered in terms of geological distribution and eventual influence on the qu
ality of life of the population, agriculture and cattle raising activities.
