Repetition as a narrative tool in Andre Malraux's novel L''Espoir'

Repetition would seem to undermine the linear progress of a narration. In p oint of fact and somewhat paradoxically, in Malraux's work it turns out to be the device par excellence for both the progression of the story, its pas sage from one stage to another, and the passage of its meaning or direction to the reader. Thus it appears as both a means and an outcome.
