Abstract
Within the framework of the ETFSI (extended Thomas-Fermi plus Strutinsky in tegral) mass formula, a precision fit of nuclear masses with Skyrme forces, subject to the constraint that neutron matter does not collapse at nuclear or subnuclear densities, is possible if, but only if, the nuclear-matter s ymmetry coefficient J Lies close to 28 MeV.
