The Yb:YCOB crystals with good optical quality were obtained by the Czochra
lsky technology. Absorption and emission spectra and luminescence decay kin
etics were measured. Spectra of absorption and emission cross-section were
designed by the reciprocity and the Fuhtbauer-Ladenburg methods. Comparison
spectral and luminescence properties of YCOB crystals and some others crys
tals doped with ytterbium were performed. The results of spectroscopic inve
stigations have confirmed that the Yb:YCOB crystals are of great interest a
s active elements for diode pumping tunable lasers and lasers with supersho
