The magnetic properties of monoatomic Co wires supported on the Pd(110) sub
strate have been studied using a self-consistent spd-tight-binding model wi
th parameters fitted to ab initio tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital r
esults for the ideal Co monolayer deposited on the same substrate. The geom
etrical structure of the system is based on recent scanning tunneling micro
scopy experiments for Cu wires supported on Pd(110). Two possible magnetic
configurations have been considered, one with parallel (P) magnetic couplin
g between adjacent wires and the other with antiparallel (AP) coupling. Res
ults are reported for the local magnetic moments and spin-polarized densiti
es of states, magnetic coupling between wires as a function of the interwir
e distance and wire-substrate magnetic interaction.
