A trichomonad was found in the faeces of a heifer with watery diarrhoe
a. It was classified as Tetratrichomonas buttreyi according to its mor
phology as revealed by scanning electron microscopy. This flagellate w
as successfully maintained in a cysteine-peptone-liver medium. It is,
to our knowledge, the first report of Tetratrichomonas buttreyi in Spa
in. This trichomonad appears to be a nonpathogenic commensal which oft
en proliferates in fluid faeces.
