A survey was conducted of pesticide distribution in the water of the upper
Jordan basin, due to the importance of its quality as the main source of dr
inking water in Israel. A preliminary survey of pesticide distributers and
farmers revealed intensive use of many pesticides in agriculture. Four of t
hese were selected as targets for monitoring in the surface water of the re
gion, at seven sampling stations. The highest residue found was of aldicarb
and its metabolites, with lower content of organophosphate and organochlor
ine insecticides. No concentrations reached the maximum levels permitted by
the EPA for drinking water, but recommendations were made, nonetheless, fo
r continuous monitoring of pesticides in the region. Subsequent monitoring
(1993-1997) showed a steady decrease in aldicarb residues.
