The surface miner - an innovative excavator for continuous open-cast mining

The prototype of an MTS 1250 surface miner with a planned output of 1250 m( 3)/h (solid cubic metres) was developed by MAN TAKRAF with technical suppor t from Dresden Technical University and the Mitteldeutchse Braunkohlengesel lschaft mbH MIBRAG, and then tested, successfully in the Profen opencast mi ne. The technical design of the surface miner is based on detailed analysis of all equipment available on the market. When fitted with a diesel-hydrau lic drive the machine is used in conjunction with trucks, and when combined with a special belt wagon and a conveyor belt system the surface miner can befitted with an electro-mechanical or electro-hydraulic drive. The new de sign of machine is highly suitable for excavating mineral raw materials, ev en in difficult deposits. Machines with smaller or larger outputs can also be provided to suit the requirements of the application.
