Two defective viral vectors containing nucleic acid sequences from rubella
virus strains RJ and RS linked to the reporter gene luciferase have been co
nstructed. The vector RNAs are shown to replicate and interfere with wildty
pe virus in co-infected cells. The interference rs associated with a polymo
rphic nucleotide at nt34 in the 5' stem-loop. The use of these constructs a
s expression vectors is discussed.
