The solid-phase thermal and catalytic hydrosilylation of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolid
one on the surface of hydride silicas has been studied. It was found that t
hermal polymerization of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone is a side reaction of the th
ermal hydrosilylation of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone. During the catalytic hydros
ilylation of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, two side reactions took place. These we
re the interaction of the silicon-hydride groups with water and with propan
ol-2 and the formation of metallic platinum. The thermal hydrosilylation of
N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, without the use of catalyst and solvent, is the pre
ferred method for the chemical bonding of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone in the surf
ace layer of hydride silicas. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights res
