This paper reports the design, implementation, and performance evaluation o
f a CORBA based distributed control architecture for signalling and mobilit
y management in the Wireless ATM Research project (WARP). The distributed c
ontrol architecture makes use of open signalling to manipulate the various
network resources to realise network services such as call control, multica
st, and mobility management. Open signalling provides the flexibility and e
ase in creating new network services as opposed to standard signalling appr
oaches such as the ATM Forum signalling. The network control architecture p
rovides inter-working with the ATM Forum UNI signalling. The open signallin
g is found to be more flexible compared to the UNI-PNNI based signalling an
d yields comparable delay performance. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All r
