Abstract
A critical review of the safety situation in the Indian Railways shows grav e problems at all levels. Maintenance lapses of track and of moving stock, outdated technology, unimaginative human resource management practices, poo r investment in research as well as serious systemic and managerial problem s have contributed to the situation.
