The characterization of a glycosphingolipid in a lichen is reported fo
r the first time. That occurring in Ramalina celastri is an O-beta-D-g
alactopyranosyl-(1-->1')-ceramide. Its main lipid components are (4E)-
sphingenine, sphinganine and icosa-sphinganine, esterified with palmit
ic, oleic and 2-hydroxypalmitic acids. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
