In industry, broad use is made of nickel and its compounds. Regulations con
cerning the classification and limit values of nickel and its compounds are
complex. The present article gives an overview of the requirements applyin
g to the circulation and use of these substances in accordance with EU legi
slation. Compliance must also be ensured with the partly deriving national
provisions, viz. the classification according to the German TRGS 905 (techn
ical regulations for hazardous substances) and the national atmospheric lim
it values. The author draws an integral picture of the existing regulations
relating to the carcinogenic and sensitising effects of nickel and nickel
compounds. In this context, mention is also made of international evaluatio
ns from other countries. To round off the presentation, a progress report i
