Cellulitis is a commonly seen clinical syndrome that is most often associat
ed with beta-haemolytic streptococci and Staphylococcus aureus. Several med
ical conditions and a variety of procedures can predispose to the developme
nt of cellulitis by a common mechanism: venous and lymphatic compromise. Th
e precise pathophysiologic and immunologic details involved in the predispo
sition to cellulitis remain poorly understood. Therapy is directed at resol
ution of acute infection and prevention of recurrent episodes of cellulitis
