Exciting research in cognition today combines computer modeling with neurop
sychological studies of the functioning of the brain and with the experimen
tal study of human learning and problem solving. The computer models are co
mpared with findings about brain processes and their organization and findi
ngs about the moment-by-moment progress of humans as they learn and solve p
roblems. This research is helping to test and improve detailed theories of
the human symbolic processes used in learning and thinking and to build the
ories of how skills and knowledge can be taught effectively and efficiently
