Abstract
Three phytoplankton species sampled from river Yamuna were cultured in diff erent concentrations of zinc (0.08-8.00 mu m). In these cultures (NaHCO3)-C -14 was incorporated to determine primary production and photosynthetic act ivity. There was an increase in photosynthetic activity upto 74% under 4.00 and 8.00 mu m of zn. This increase in the rate of photosynthesis can be ex plained as algae self protection in order to overcome pollution.
