The clastogenecity of two common fungicides namely Captan and Zineb was ass
essed by using Allium test as an assay system. Root meristems of Allium cep
a were exposed to different concentrations of fungicides for one hour follo
wed by 0.4,12,24 and 48 hours recovery periods. Both the fungicides have sh
own to depress mitotic index. Chromosomal and chromatid aberrations were th
e most common in metaphase studies of the two fungicides. Captan was found
to be a potential clastogenic agent.
