Ma. Baenziger et al., DYNAMIC LOADS ON TRANSMISSION-LINE STRUCTURES DUE TO GALLOPING CONDUCTORS, IEEE transactions on power delivery, 9(1), 1994, pp. 40-47
During ice storms, transmission line systems can be extensively damage
d due to galloping conductors. The design of support structures and co
mponents requires a means to determine the dynamic forces during gallo
ping. This paper presents a procedure for determining the forces on in
sulators and crossarms due to the large amplitude vibration of ice-loa
ded conductors. Wind tunnel experiments were conducted to verify the d
esign procedure and to increase understanding of the galloping phenome
non.
