The thermal diffusivity and some electronic transport properties of semicon
ducting ore mineral marmatite (ZnS:Fe) from the Trepca mine (Yugoslavia) we
re determined using a photoacoustic method with a transmission detection co
nfiguration. Thermal diffusivity, coefficient of carrier diffusion, the exc
ess carrier lifetime, and the rear and front surface recombination Velociti
es were calculated by fitting experimental spectra and theoretical photoaco
ustic amplitude and phase signals. The results obtained by optical transmis
sion and reflectivity measurements were used to compare the determined valu
es of the optical absorption coefficient using photoacoustic (PA) and optic
al methods. The mobility of the photogenerated free carrier holes of single
crystal marmatite was calculated, for the first time, to be mu(p) similar
to 428 cm(2)/Vs. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.
