This paper incorporates robust capability into adaptive array beamforming b
ased on the eigenanalysis interference canceler (EIC). It has been shown th
at the EIC demonstrates the advantages of ast convergence speed and maximal
suppression of interference over the conventional beamformers. However, th
e performance of the EIC is very sensitive to a pointing error, especially
when the interference number is overestimated. Projecting the incorrect ste
ering vector onto the signal subspace, we present a robust technique where
an appropriate blocking matrix is constructed in the EIC to mitigate the ef
fect of the pointing error. Employing the corrected steering vector, the si
gnal cancellation can be overcome even if the interference number is overes
timated. Computer simulations are provided to illustrate the robust capabil
ity of the proposed technique. (C) John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
