The strongest limitation of the Heidelberg proton microprobe setup is the l
ow brightness of its Penning ion source, resulting in less than 1 pA of bea
m current if a spot of 1 mu m(2) is focused. To test different ion sources
a new device for brightness measurements was built and attached to the ion
source test bench of the institute. So far, the brightness of three types o
f ion sources has been tested for proton beams, a microwave type, a Penning
source and two different radio frequency (RF) sources. The setup of the de
vice is presented and the new results are discussed. (C) 2000 Published by
