Abstract
The strongest limitation of the Heidelberg proton microprobe setup is the l ow brightness of its Penning ion source, resulting in less than 1 pA of bea m current if a spot of 1 mu m(2) is focused. To test different ion sources a new device for brightness measurements was built and attached to the ion source test bench of the institute. So far, the brightness of three types o f ion sources has been tested for proton beams, a microwave type, a Penning source and two different radio frequency (RF) sources. The setup of the de vice is presented and the new results are discussed. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
