Abstract
The analytical capabilities of the ion beam facility at the CTU in Prague h ave been extended to allow lateral mapping of surface elemental concentrati ons. A new target chamber has been designed and built to include a moving s ample stage and can be used for simultaneous PIXE and RES analysis. Diamete r of proton or helium beam is reduced by collimator to value typically 1-0. 1 mm. Analyses can be carried out either in high vacuum or in helium atmosp here up to 10 Pa to prevent charging in case of insulating samples. Target chamber of 93 mm in diameter, scanning area 20 x 20 mm(2), makes it possibl e to analyse different types of samples, including minerals or archaeologic al artifacts. The hardware design of the setup at the CTU as well as the re sults of analysis of welded material are discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Scien ce B.V. All rights reserved.
