In this paper on the basis of a concept of soft coke layer, the coking rate
in furnace tubes is defined as the rate difference between the coke forming
rate and its defusing rate. Based on the principles of process transfers a
nd the mechanisms of thermal reactions and coke formation for the residual
oil the coking mechanism in furnace tubes is studied. A correlative method
for describing the coking rate equation with good applicability is proposed
according to the fact that the coking rate in tubes is relatively small.
