The illuminator Loyset Liedet (c. 1420-1479), who was active at the Burgund
ian court between 1460 and 1479, has left behind an important corpus of ill
uminated manuscripts. His work has now been supplemented with another, a Ch
ronique abregee des rois de France, attributed to Guillaume de Nangis in th
e Bibliotheque nationale de France (Fr. 6463). The article sets out to pres
ent this illuminated manuscript which was produced for Charles the Bold. Fi
rstly, Liedet's distinctive codicological and ornamental characteristics wi
ll be analysed in the light of relevant information extracted from an accou
nt book. Then follows an analysis of payments for the work based on a point
system, already studied by A. de Schryver. The seven miniatures in the boo
k are compared with other works produced in Bruges by the artist and his wo
rkshop. Lastly, attention will focus on the original binding, not only beca
use of its rarity but also because it gives us understanding of what the ex
pression "white leather cover" to describe a binding made out of natural un
dyed leather means. And so another direction for research into Liedet's pro
lific work, still awaiting a comprehensive study, has opened up.
