A theoretical model is developed for describing the transition of metals fr
om the state of active dissolution in electrolytes to the state of passivat
ion. The model predicts a significant drop in the anode current density wit
hin a narrow potential range. This is due to the formation of two-dimension
al islets of passive oxide at the metal surface. The dependence of the kine
tic characteristics of this process on the anode potential and energetic in
homogeneity of the surface is taken into account.
