The study tackles the problems encountered in translating St neutral gender
into TT marked categories and vice-versa. By means of a contrastive textua
l approach, it sets out to investigate points of divergence between English
and Arabic gender distinction and assesses the changes in focus, function
and impact in the target version of the St. The study concludes with an ana
lysis of the strategies employed by translators in neutralizing the negativ
e transfer of gender markedness.
