Abstract
The proposed MRT North East Line (NEL) consists of sixteen transit stations and a depot. Thirteen of the underground stations are designed as Civil De fence (CD) shelters as required by the Civil Defence Shelter Bureau (CDSB) of Singapore. This paper presents the main CD design requirements and its i mplications on the architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical des ign aspects of an underground rail transit station. It shows how a public t ransport facility can be successfully designed to meet both transit and CD operational requirements, (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All r ights reserved.
